Herman Leonard: Jazz Memories
Another exciting collection of Jazz photographs debuts at Gallery 270 on Wednesday, October 20, with a reception for the artist. The collection features highlights from Herman Leonard’s more than half-century career and focuses on his some of the great Jazz singers and musicians of the 20th Century. The significance of Leonard’s work was confirmed when the Smithsonian Institution added his entire collection of Jazz photographs to its permanent archives of musical history.
Herman Leonard began his career shooting such luminaries as Albert Einstein, Harry Truman and Clark Gable. He soon turned his attention to the music world, working with Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Quincy Jones, and practically every other well-known figure in the business. His diverse interests have led him to include travel, fashion and journalism in his body of work.
Mr. Leonard will meet the public at Gallery 270 during the opening, and live Jazz will set an appropriate tone for the evening. Prints of more than two-dozen subjects will be available for sale at the gallery, as will Mr. Leonard’s book Jazz Memories. This 205-page collection is impressive in its scope and beautiful in its design and printing. With text by Mr. Leonard accompanying photographs from the 1940s through the 1990s, the book would make a unique addition to any collection of music or photography.
